About this repair
The drivetrain carries the power to the wheels: driveshafts, CV axles, differentials and, on 4WD and AWD vehicles, transfer cases. Vibration, clunks and whines are the early signs. We trace them to the part at fault and repair or replace it.
Signs you need it
- A clicking noise when turning, from a worn CV joint
- Vibration at speed or a clunk when you shift between drive and reverse
- A whine or howl that changes with speed
- Oil leaking from the differential or the axle seals
Don't replace it. Repair it.
Before you replace the transmission
A slipping or noisy gearbox is not always a dead one. A solenoid, a seal, a clutch pack, a worn clutch or a bad mount can feel the same. We find which one it is before anyone talks about a new unit.

Common questions
What does a bad CV axle sound like?
Usually a rhythmic clicking when you turn sharply. A torn rubber boot lets the grease out and dirt in, and the joint wears fast after that.
Does the differential need service?
Its gear oil should be changed at the interval the manufacturer sets, or sooner if you tow or off-road. A whine or a leak means it should be looked at.
